Where to begin planning your wedding??If you’ve found yourself here – I’m going to guess congratulations are in order!! Now, which flip side do you fit? Have you been dreaming about this moment since childhood? Or never once typed “weddings” into the dark hole of Pinterest? One thing is for sure though – this is happening – so get EXCITED!! But now what? Of course, picking a season/a destination is top of the list, but what else?
Every few weeks we are going to guide you through the various aspects of planning your wedding – from budgeting to choosing a venue, to honeymoons and everything in between. What a better place to start than with an overview of what you have to keep in mind, and then with each new blog post we will break out one area to dive into a deeper focus.
When picking a date, if possible, you want to try and look at least 9-12 months out. This gives you some breathing room to plan – and having even more time never hurts (especially if you are planning an Okanagan wedding!!). If you have your heart set on a particular venue (perhaps God’s Mountain, Sanctuary Gardens or Painted Rock) and especially if you aren’t leaving yourself a lot of time to plan, you will want to pick at least a few dates to work with until you are able to lock down the location(s) of your choice. If you are planning a destination wedding, you may consider picking a date at least a year or more in advance, to give your guests lots of time to plan and save for this epic trip.
We suggest that the next step to figure out is your budget. Your budget is going to dictate so many of your choices. By knowing how much money you have to work with, you hopefully won’t be left with any surprises down the road! The average BC wedding rings in around $30,000 (gulp) – we know… Stay tuned for our budgeting post to come!
Some may be surprised that this step needs to be done early but get started on that guest list right away. Like your budget, the number of people you want to invite to your wedding is going to directly affect a lot of choices. Getting a good idea of your numbers early on will set you up for success as you work through the rest of your details.
Now the fun begins. Picking a theme or style for your wedding may be something that you had settled long before the wedding was even on the table, then again maybe not? Ask yourself – how do you want your guests to feel? How do you want to feel? What style best reflects you as a couple and the things most important to you? Narrowing down your style will influence many choices including finding the right fit for a wedding planner, down to the florist who will carry your vision right through to the centrepieces on your tables. Be sure to check out Lavender and Lace Floral Farm, Society Floral, and A New Leaf Floral! Now get creative (or let us throw around some ideas) – there is so much great inspiration out there. Don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun with it!

Once you have laid the foundation of your plans you can really get that ball rolling and start checking items off your list. We provide all of our clients with month-to-month TO DO lists which they find to be really helpful including the finer details like – mapping out a seating plan, gifts for the bridal party and when to send out your save-the-date!
Now we get it – planning a wedding isn’t for everyone. Some people revel in the whole process, while others have no intention of doing it all on their own. Hiring a wedding planner is a great way to align all of your thoughts and make your wedding dream a reality. Don’t think you need to hand over all of the reins either. Often times you can choose from various offerings. We at Mint Julep Creative Events like giving our Okanagan brides some choice when it comes to our level of involvement.
One thing we can’t say enough though is to enjoy the process! Seeing your vision come to life, especially one as special as your wedding day, is a lot of work. We can assure you that when that week rolls around it will be worth every minute. Don’t be shy about reaching out to us for a consultation.
Not sure if hiring a wedding planner is for you? Stay tuned for more detailed planning topics coming up.
