DIY: Macrame Wall Hanging

We are absolutely in love with Macrame wall hangings this season!! Think beachy, boho, enchanted garden, mystical woodland and it’s a must! These knotted “tapestries” make a great backdrop for your ceremony. We are imagining vines growing up and through the knots – or perhaps there’s a gorgeous flower detail (dahlias, peonies, ranunculus) covering the top corner? Better still, what about behind the head table at your reception, or as part of your photo booth? The ideas are endless!!

Now what is Macrame one might ask? It is a French word that means KNOT and Macrame is the art of decorative knot tying. The knots are created by hand – no needles, looms or tools needed – and can be manipulated into a world of different patterns and finished products. It doesn’t take long to find lots of inspiration and instruction online to help you get started knotting!

The team at Mint Julep Creative Events set out to make our own wall hanging recently for the Wedding Expo and the added bonus is we now have it to offer our Okanagan brides as part of our custom rental inventory. We had a blast putting this together and thought we would share it with you here on the blog!

Our material of choice?

We decided to go with a Cotton Macrame rope from The Middle Aisle. You don’t have to go far to find options that work, though. Sites like www.ropeshop.ca, any craft store, or even some hardware stores, will have something for you.

What did we do?

  • We started with alternate facing diagonal double half hitch knots (say that 10 times fast!)
  • For the body of the hanging we used the alternating square knot with the half knot down the sides.
  • We finished the piece with a tassle fringe along the bottom
  • You will notice that we thread through some copper cylinder beads as accents. This is totally optional and another place to get creative. Wooden hoops are often used, but any bead that is big enough will work, really.

Loving this idea but not sure where to start? Looking to having something made for your Okanagan wedding? Drop us a note to say hello!
